I don’t know about you, but I LOVE looking at cool houses and places to stay. Air Bnb offers travelers the opportunity to find really pretty, fun, or wild places to stay rather than basic hotels. I have done a lot of digging, just for fun really, and found so many unique places to stay in New Mexico; so I am here to share the best of the unique with you!
If you have never been to New Mexico, well you should, it has so much to offer! If you plan to travel for leisure or for your elopement you need to check out these awesome places!
Cabins aren’t that unique, I know, but New Mexico is the desert so it is a little unique. The most common place to find cabins is in Ruidoso and the surrounding areas, and a few in Taos. Ruidoso is in Southern NM between Las Cruces and Roswell. Taos on the other hand, is way up North very close to Colorado.
Just because it is a cabin, doesn’t mean it has to be out dated. They can be cute and modern, but most importantly cabins are often secluded so you can have a nice quiet trip together! If you want to spend your stay in a cozy cabin, here are some of the most unique ones I found. I love A-frames so you will find some here!
The Hygge Haus – Ruidoso
Miles Hacienda: Beautifully Remodeled – in Ruidoso
Valley View Treehouse – Ruidoso
Walk to Taos Ski Valley Rubezahl trail – Taos Ski Valley
Eclectic Cabin w/ Kiva, 11 Mi to Taos Ski! – Arroyo Seco
Taos is know for it’s earthship community. If you don’t know what an earthship is I will explain, but you can read a lot more about them and their community here.
Earthships are solar houses that are typically fully or partially off grid and are made from natural or recycled material. They have a very unique style and look to them, though none are the same. Many have large windows on one side, and often lots of curves in their design. These structures are probably the most unique places to stay in New Mexico. You have never seen anything like an earthship before!
Spectacular Earthship – Taos County
Newest Simple Survival Earthship Studio – Taos County
Brand New Studio Earthship – Taos
Picuris – Stunnning Global Model Earthship – El Prado
Encounter Earthship – First one in Taos – El Prado
Taos Earthship: Modern + Mesa – El Prado
These dome houses aren’t as unique to NM as earthships, but they are quite a sight! Dome houses are energy efficient, weather proof and low cost to build compared to a regular home. The first dome house I ever saw was in Sedona and it had multiple sections. It use to be multiple colors but they have since painted it tan to help it blend in more due to trespassing.
These houses come in all sized and are all uniquely their own. We have a lot more here all over New Mexico than I thought. Here are my top picks for Unique dome stays in NM!
The Domes – nestled in remote mountains! – High Rolls
Off-The-Grid Dome & Private Hot Mineral Spring – Truth or Consequences
Kurt’s Taos Mountain Dome – Arroyo Seco
Off-grid Geodesic Dome Sanctuary – Carson
A yurt is essentially a big/fancy tent. It has a specific shape that they tend to be, basically if you see one you know what it is. Some yurts have kitchens and bathrooms while some may have an outdoor patio kitchen, or an outdoor bathroom separate from where you sleep.
Not every amazing stay is going to be on Air Bnb. But you need to check out this Yurt near Albuquerque before we get onto the Air Bnb’s. This is a true glamping experience, and I am about to staycation there!
Yurt Overlooking the Chama River – Abiquiu
Spirit Yurt at Flying Trees – Santa Fe
Latir Hike-in Camping Yurt – Red River
Luxury Yurt Glamping in the East Mountains – Edgewood
Tents and Tipis
We know a yurt is a big tent, but I figured they deserves their own section before getting into more tent-like stays. Glamorous tents and tipis are another great way to scratch that camping itch, but still have some luxury on your stay.
There are a lot of tents and tipis to stay in near Santa Fe and the surrounding areas, but you can find them all over the state. If you are visiting New Mexico during the winter be mindful that it does get cold! So when planning your stay, make sure there is heat of some sort, or bring your winter camping gear.
Lotus Belle glamping yurt/tent with Llamas – Santa Fe
Santa Fe Tipi Experience – Santa Fe
Glamorous Camping in the Lotus – Glenwood
The Tipi Retreat – Madrid
Yurt Tent Experience – Mayhill
Cloudcroft Glamping Tipi in the Forest – Mayhill
RAVEN HOUSE TIPI – Los Cerrillos
I LOVE campers! I don’t know what it is about them, but seeing all the unique things people do to make them efficient and cute is so fun. We have stayed in quite a few campers and buses all over. One really amazing camper setup is Hotel Luna Mystica near Taos. They have so many trailers to choose from in all different sizes and themes. You will see some of their stays below.
If you have your own camper but want to stay at a campsite, there are so many all over New Mexico. The Jemez Pueblo near Albuquerque is so beautiful and I recommend finding a campsite there to explore the area. The Jemez has tunnels, hot springs, waterfalls and so so SO much more! These campers are some of my favorite unique places to stay in New Mexico.
Sticky Fingers Hotel – breakf./lunch/dinner avail. – Albuquerque
Modesto Gardens – Hot Tub-GameRm-Gym+ – Albuquerque
Spartacus – Hotel Luna Mystica – El Prado
Sundance – Hotel Luna Mystica – El Prado
Castor – Hotel Luna Mystica – El Prado
Silvester at Sunnyville Hot Springs Resort – Truth or Consequences
Tiny houses, like campers, are so unique! I love how they are becoming more popular to find for staying at and living in. Many tiny houses are built to be transported so they are like a fancier camper. Though some are built to stay in the same spot.
The Tiny Zia House w/Bikes – Albuquerque
Sweet Taos Country Cottage – Taos
Shipping Container Home With Mountain Views – El Prado
Quail Run, a Tiny Twist on the Old West – Alamogordo
